The Mental Health Spectrum

Source: Wellbeing Institute, University of Cambridge, 2011

Felicia Huppert’s research found that the majority of the population have moderate mental health. A small percentage of the population is flourishing.  The key to this curve is when an individual is experiencing chronic stress, tragedy and/or trauma, they move to the left of the curve.  For people who have moderate mental health, they can begin to languish. If they are already languishing, they can being to suffer from a mental disorder.

The Merck study found that veterinarians have a slightly lower level of wellbeing than the general population.  What is more concerning is that 1 in 20 veterinarians suffer from serious psychological distress and only half those veterinarians are seeking help.

The aim of positive psychology is to give people the resources so they can flourish in their life.

Building psychological resources and implementing strategies in your life will improve your wellbeing.
The key to a good life is to flourish.

The Yerkes-Dodson Law & Performance

Most people believe if they work harder, they will perform better.  That is definitely true, however, there comes a point where performance decreases. This point is different for experienced veterinarians and team members compared to new graduates and trainee nurses. Learn why this occurs in the seminar and why increasing the workload of new graduates and nurses can backfire.

Some people live on the right side of the curve.  Their bodies are chronically stressed.  No one is able to sustain this long term. It leads to burnout plus much more.  Natasha will discuss why this occurs and what to do about it.

In this Seminar you will learn:

  • What is stress & how does it affect your performance

  • What causes you stress in practice

  • How to manage your stress and tip to the left of the curve

  • What is resilience and how it contributes to wellbeing

What Others Have Said about Natasha’s Seminars

In March I attended the 2018 AVA East Coast Roadshow, QLD, “Beyond the Ether” conference where Natasha Wilkes delivered a wellness workshop entitled “Your brilliant career: the highs, the lows and everywhere in between.” I found this to be an absolutely refreshing take on personal wellness in the veterinary profession.

Natasha is a passionate and dynamic speaker, and we, the delegates, were active participants in a relevant and engaging workshop that informed us in the moment about ourselves; we were given time to genuinely reflect on self, and then she guided us through translation of that into what we want and indeed need from our veterinary careers. The opportunity to self-reflect and truly have a look at where you’ve come from, what you’re doing and where you’re going is a gift for all veterinarians, no matter what stage you are at in your career.

Natasha’s work opens the door to wellness and mindfulness, in a tangible, transparent, and very practical way. From a personal perspective this is long overdue. I know there are many of us in the veterinary profession, who probably also need to take some time for ourselves, to regain perspective and remember who they are and why we became vets.

This is a “no brainer”! Just attend a workshop with Natasha, she is amazing to learn from, and she provides you with the opportunity to create a whole new perspective on your career and life as a veterinarian.
